Yokoi wanted to recreate the feeling of 1985's Super Mario Bros., only set in another world separate from the Mushroom Kingdom.

She was created by Shigeru Miyamoto's mentor Gunpei Yokoi, the producer of Super Mario Land. Since her appearance in Mario Tennis, Daisy has been a staple playable character in the Mario spin-off games, often paired with her best friend Peach. This became the plot of the 1993 live-action film Super Mario Bros., in which Luigi saves Daisy from King Koopa. Described as a tomboy, she used to be rumored to be Luigi's love interest, similarly to Princess Peach being the love interest of Mario, but it is now official after being confirmed by Nintendo. She debuted in 1989's Super Mario Land as the ruler of Sarasaland. Princess Daisy ( Japanese: デイジー姫, Hepburn: Deijī-hime, pronounced ) is a fictional character in the Mario series of video games.
